Accutane will soon be in the news

Category: Accutane News

A silent epidemic of unspeakable injuries continues to follow this drug, but we see nothing in the media about it. I predict that as the litigation over these injury cases heats up, people will finally have a chance to learn about the dangers of IBS, suicide and other adverse events related to Accutane. Nobody wants their guts cut out.

Acne Scar Treatment

Category: Accutane News

Recently, a South African plastic surgeon developed a needling device that can be used for acne scarring. He noticed that patients who had tattoos never wrinkled (or wrinkled much less) in the areas where the tattoos were placed. He theorized that by producing thousands of pricks through the skin, an injury underneath the surface of the skin is produced which leads to an inflammatory cascade. This then induces collagen production to the area and the sunken scar is elevated. Because the skin surface is not removed, the color does not change. This finding could lead to improved treatment for acne scars.

Pregnancy Warnings Ignored

Category: Accutane News

Young women aren't getting the warning that they should not take the Accutane and its generic versions during pregnancy.

Accutane is not intended for use during pregnancy due to the risk of birth defects.

That risk is stressed in information from the drug's makers. The FDA also recently tightened its rules to try to prevent pregnant women from taking acne drugs such as Accutane or its generic versions.

The drug's old pregnancy prevention program was voluntary. It wasn't always heeded, a new report shows.

Warnings Are Ignored

Category: Isotretinoin

Too often we take medication just because our doctor tells us to. Doctors do not care about side effects. They are taught that side effects are rare and unavoidable, so just prescribe away. Here are some of the warnings you need to heed on Accutane:

- Accutane is a powerful, "last resort'' medication for severe acne;
- You must not take Accutane if you are pregnant or may become pregnant during treatment;
- If you get pregnant while taking Accutane, your baby will be at high risk for birth defects;
- If you take Accutane, you must use effective birth control from 1 month before the start of treatment through 1 month after the end of treatment;
- You must test negative for pregnancy within 2 weeks before starting Accutane, and you must start Accutane on the second or third day of your menstrual period;
- You may participate in a program that includes an initial free pregnancy test and birth control counseling session;
- If you become pregnant, you must immediately stop taking Accutane and see your doctor;
- You have read and understood the Accutane patient brochure and asked your doctor any questions you had;
- You are not currently pregnant and do not plan to become pregnant for at least 30 days after you finish taking Accutane.

Accutane Maker trying to Broaden Use

Category: Isotretinoin

Why would there be a study using Accutane in cancer patients? Because the drug maker wants to sell more of this dangerous compound. However they had no luck with the following study:

Taking a vitamin A derivative called isotretinoin did not reduce the risk of second primary tumors or improve survival in patients with stage I or II head and neck squamous cell cancers (HNSCC), according to a study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. In addition, current smokers had an increased risk of second primary cancers and death.

Drug Marketers Can Be Misleading

Category: Accutane News

According to a press release from Illinois Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the FDA has sent 170 letters over the past 5 years to pharmaceutical companies regarding "false" or "misleading" advertising of certain prescription drugs. Accutane is one of the drugs on that list. Does misleading drug marketing affect consumers? Can it pose danger to patients who may not be aware of the detrimental side effects of some drugs?
