Accutane will soon be in the news

A silent epidemic of unspeakable injuries continues to follow this drug, but we see nothing in the media about it. I predict that as the litigation over these injury cases heats up, people will finally have a chance to learn about the dangers of IBS, suicide and other adverse events related to Accutane. Nobody wants their guts cut out.

Acne Scar Treatment

Recently, a South African plastic surgeon developed a needling device that can be used for acne scarring. He noticed that patients who had tattoos never wrinkled (or wrinkled much less) in the areas where the tattoos were placed. He theorized that by producing thousands of pricks through the skin, an injury underneath the surface of the skin is produced which leads to an inflammatory cascade. This then induces collagen production to the area and the sunken scar is elevated. Because the skin surface is not removed, the color does not change. This finding could lead to improved treatment for acne scars.

Pregnancy Warnings Ignored

Young women aren't getting the warning that they should not take the Accutane and its generic versions during pregnancy.

Accutane is not intended for use during pregnancy due to the risk of birth defects.

That risk is stressed in information from the drug's makers. The FDA also recently tightened its rules to try to prevent pregnant women from taking acne drugs such as Accutane or its generic versions.

The drug's old pregnancy prevention program was voluntary. It wasn't always heeded, a new report shows.

Drug Marketers Can Be Misleading

According to a press release from Illinois Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the FDA has sent 170 letters over the past 5 years to pharmaceutical companies regarding "false" or "misleading" advertising of certain prescription drugs. Accutane is one of the drugs on that list. Does misleading drug marketing affect consumers? Can it pose danger to patients who may not be aware of the detrimental side effects of some drugs?

Stroke and Heart Attack Side Effects Reported

According to CanWest News Service, Health Canada is currently investigating reports from patients who have suffered from strokes and heart attacks while taking Accutane. Since the drug's 1983 approval in Canada, there have been 29 cases of strokes, heart attacks and blood clots in patients taking Accutane.
