Recently, a South African plastic surgeon developed a needling device that can be used for acne scarring. He noticed that patients who had tattoos never wrinkled (or wrinkled much less) in the areas where the tattoos were placed. He theorized that by producing thousands of pricks through the skin, an injury underneath the surface of the skin is produced which leads to an inflammatory cascade. This then induces collagen production to the area and the sunken scar is elevated. Because the skin surface is not removed, the color does not change. This finding could lead to improved treatment for acne scars.
