According to CanWest News Service, Health Canada is currently investigating reports from patients who have suffered from strokes and heart attacks while taking Accutane. Since the drug's 1983 approval in Canada, there have been 29 cases of strokes, heart attacks and blood clots in patients taking Accutane.

Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, has already been linked to depression, suicide and birth defects in a number of patients, and continues to be investigated by the United States FDA as well.

The new Health Canada report states:

Health-care professionals are encouraged to report any cases of myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular and thromboembolic disorders suspected of being associated with isotretinoin.

IMS Health Canada reports that 224,515 prescriptions for Accutane were filled in Canada last year, totaling $33.8 million in sales.
