Isotretinoin (eye soe tret' i noyn) is a retinoid prescribed as a last resort for severe nodular acne in patients who have not responded to other treatments, oral or topical. It is taken orally, two times a day. It sometimes takes 4 to 6 weeks of treatment before noticing results; however, improvement should occur within 15 to 20 weeks.

It is available in 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg capsules.
Isotretinoin was originally released by Hoffmann-La Roche in 1982. Since that time, numerous side effects have been reported, including depression, suicide, hair loss, severe birth defects, decreased night vision, degenerative disc disease, cartilage degeneration, bone disease, rosacea, arthralgias, congenital heart defects, and ischemic colitis.
