Category: The FDA and Accutane

In July 2005 the FDA issued an alert that patients using the acne medication Accutane should be closely watched for symptoms of depression. The FDA continues to assess reports of suicide or depression assoicated with the use of Accutane, manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals.

As part of their alert, the FDA also recommends that anyone taking Accutane who seems to demonstrate signs of depression should immediately stop taking the medication and contact their physician or health professional. Symptoms of depression may include sad or anxious moods, irritability, acting on dangerous impulses, anger, loss of pleasure or interest in social activities, sleeping too much or too little, changes in weight or appetite, school or ork performance going down, or trouble concentrating.
